What Causes Personality Disorders?

No one knows exactly what causes personality disorders, although certain factors seem to increase the risk of developing or triggering personality disorders, including:

  • Family history of personality disorders or other mental illness
  • Verbal, physical, or sexual abuse during childhood
  • Neglect, or an unstable/chaotic family life during childhood
  • Variations in brain chemistry and structure

Types of Personality Disorders

Personality disorders usually begin in the teen years or early adulthood. Some personality disorders are:

  • Narcissistic personality disorder
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Antisocial personality disorder
  • Avoidant personality disorder

Personality disorders are thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental influences.
